January 16, 2018
CHH Invites Community to GO Red Day – Friday, Feb 2nd
February is American Heart Health Month, and Charlotte Hungerford Hospital (CHH) is joining healthcare organizations and companies across the nation to “GO RED” for women on Friday, February 2nd to highlight symptoms and prevention methods for women regarding heart disease.
CHH is offering free blood pressure screenings, giveaways, tips and information on heart disease Friday, February 2nd from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the CHH cafeteria, 540 Litchfield Street, Torrington. The hospital’s food service will also feature special heart healthy meal selections for purchase. CHH staff members and all those attending are encouraged to wear red to raise awareness that day.
This annual observance is held in conjunction with the American Heart Association’s national campaign to raise awareness of heart disease in women and encourage them to take charge of their health. Why Go Red? Cardiovascular disease in the U.S. kills approximately one woman every 80 seconds. The good news is that 80 percent of cardiac events may be prevented with education and lifestyle changes. Go Red For Women advocates for more research and swifter action for women’s heart health.
“The national ‘Go Red’ campaign is designed for women, but men are most welcome to participate in this heart health initiative. Many members of our community have been personally touched by heart disease and this is a wonderful opportunity to raise awareness” said Jenna Haley MS, ACSM Certified Exercise Physiologist, Clinical Coordinator Cardiac Rehab & Cardiodiagnostics at CHH.
Earlier that day, visit Westfarms Mall in Farmington for the Walk to Wellness Program to learn more about new blood pressure guidelines and how exercise can be used as a tool to improve overall cardiovascular health. Blood Pressure and Body Fat Screenings will also be offered. Presented by Amanda Zaleski, MS, RPT (AMT), Exercise Physiologist, Hartford Hospital, the program will take place Friday, February 2, 2018, 8:30 am to 9:30 am at the Hartford HealthCare Wellness Rest and Relaxation Lounge (Lower Level of Westfarms near Nordstrom). Registration is required. Please call 1.855.HHC.HERE (1.855.442.4373).
According to the American Heart Association, heart attacks occur when the flow of blood to the heart is blocked by a buildup of plaque in coronary arteries. While the initial causation can often be pinned on the usual suspects—heavy smokers, people with high-stress lifestyles, or those who are excessively overweight—the not-so-usual suspects can also be at high risk for heart attack. As with men, the most common heart attack symptom in women is chest pain or discomfort. But it’s important to note that women are more likely to experience the other common symptoms, particularly shortness of breath, nausea/vomiting and back or jaw pain.
Remember to keep on top of heart disease and know how it affects you. Schedule a visit your doctor to learn your personal health numbers including Blood Pressure, Cholesterol, Blood Sugar and Body Mass Index (BMI) and assess your risk for heart disease and stroke. Remember, CHH offers Free Blood Pressure screenings weekly on Tuesdays from 9 to 11 a.m. at Maria Seymour Brooker Memorial, 157 Litchfield Street, Torrington. For more information call 860 489 1328.
